Inquiry - UV Safety (2025-2026)

The APPG for Beauty and Wellbeing is issuing a Call for Evidence in a new inquiry reviewing UV safety in the UK.

Aim:

To protect the public against harmful UVA and UVB exposure and the increased risk of skin cancer.

Terms of Reference:

  • Review UV safety in the UK.

  • Within the scope of this inquiry are UV exposure and UV protection.

  • Evaluate the standard of education on UV safety throughout the UK — comprising the information disseminated by the industry to consumers; the information imparted to children in schools; the information disseminated via media platforms.

  • Assess the affordability of UV protection products and whether cost has an impact on usage.

  • Assess whether changes in behaviour towards UV exposure could relieve the burden on the NHS.

  • Review the way in which products and services that involve UV exposure are marketed.

The APPG invites written evidence from the public, organisations, industry bodies and academics, on the above terms of reference by 31st October 2025.

Please submit responses to the call for evidence to beautyappg@britishbeautycouncil.com. Each submission should be in Word format and include a contact name, organisation name, and contact email address.

Where possible, please keep submissions to no more than two pages, and there is no requirement to answer all the call for evidence questions.

Submissions will be made public on the conclusions of the inquiry and publication of the Group’s report. Please note in your response if you wish any information to remain confidential.

The Group will be holding oral evidence sessions throughout the course of the inquiry. If you would like to put yourself forward as a witness, please email your request to beautyappg@britishbeautycouncil.com.

The APPG launched an important year-long inquiry into aesthetic non-surgical cosmetic treatments to investigate how standards for undertaking and advertising treatments such as botulinum toxins or similar anti-wrinkle injectables, dermal fillers, polydioxanone (PDO) threads and cogs, should be improved to support the beauty and aesthetics industry and protect public safety.

The Group ran a 6-week call for written evidence in June 2020 and invited witnesses to give oral evidence in its inquiry.

On Wednesday 21st June, the APPG published its concluding report and recommendations for Government.
